7 STYLE LESSONS FROM NEW YORK FASHION WEEK YOU CAN WEAR NOW

New York Fashion Week is over and I truly enjoyed it. The vibe was bright, optimistic and colorful with a strong 70s and 90s influence. From an outsider’s perspective, NYFW may come across as over-the-top, out of touch and unrelatable, but, with a little imagination, you can translate trends from the runway into your closet. In case you got FOMO, here are my 7 style lessons from NYFW that you can wear now.

1. WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY IS A THING OF THE PAST

Bright ivory boots and heels were everywhere,  officially making white the new neutral for fall. Pair with your favorite bold dress or denim, and take the streets by storm!

2. CURVES AND PLUS-SIZE ARE FINALLY INCLUDED ON THE RUNWAY

Finally, the fashion industry is waking up to reality regarding women’s bodies: 67% of us in the United States are plus-sized! Designers like Christian Siriano, Michael Kors, and Chromat embraced this fact and added curvy models in their shows.

History was made at the Addition Elle show, which was finally on the official NYFW calendar! It was the most well-rounded, inclusive brand for work, lingerie and play for sizes 12-26. My gal pal and client Danika Brysha (styled by me via Facetime) and I attended together. Both Jordyn Wood and Ashley Graham collections are available now to get your fall fix.

Another stand out? The Torrid Show where Danika strutted her stuff for them in her first New York Fashion Week debut! Shop my favorite plus-size pieces below including my blouse which was a size 18. I made it work for the show by tucking it in and draping a leather jacket over my shoulders #makeitwork. Thanks, Think PR!

Danika’s jacket is available here.

3. STOCK UP ON CLEAN DENIM

Denim got classy for the workplace. Stock up on smart tailored pieces from wide-leg denim to a well-cut suit that will easily take from you day-to-night. The button Balmain blazer below works with heels or dressy flats, and is versatile within most wardrobes.

4. GO BOLD WITH RED AND VELVET

Red is the color of the season and can be seen everywhere. Splurge on luxe and textured cherry hats, bags, and dresses. Be bold!

5. SOCK BOOTS FOR VERSATILITY

Just add a sock boot to every look and you’ll be set. Reimagine your 9-to-5 with a monochrome pantsuit and slick accessories, and let a kitten sock heel make a statement. Also, ditch the stilettos this fall for a diamond-sole shoe that is perfect for an evening look on the town. The possibilities are endless!

6. FLORAL NOW AND FOR SPRING

Re-think florals and add them to your attire. They were huge during fashion week with ethereal looks from Marchesa. It’s clear florals are no longer just for warmer weather, so toss a pair of opaque tights and boots under any dress for easy transitional styling.

7. OVERSIZED BLAZERS ARE YOUR BESTIE

Whether it’s a power shoulder blazer, plaid double-breasted jacket, or a chic velvet smoking jacket, roomy menswear blazers are about to be your outfit finisher. Remember, it takes at pieces to create an outfit.

Pair them with a leather skirt, cocktail dress, or boyfriend jeans and add a touch of badass street style to every ensemble.

Thanks again for the inspiration, Tom Ford.
